How to Survive Long Distance Relationships

Date:

You’re on holiday and you catch eyes with someone across the room. Holiday flings happen every day; but what happens when you meet someone special, and they live thousands of miles away? This is what happened to me, and that boy across the room is now my husband.

I live in Canada and was traveling throughout the UK. Well, that was my plan. I began my journey in England but never left. I met the love of my life the second day, and that was it. My flight was booked to Dublin, but I never got on my flight. I also never got on my flight home to Canada. Visa canceled my credit card and my mom was having a heart attack, so I decided it was time to come down from my cloud.

This happened in February of 2019. In April 2019, he visited for my birthday, moved to Canada one month later, and we were married in October of that year. long distance relationships can and DO work out.

Unfortunately, you cannot always be together right away. Whether you’re in the next state, or across the ocean, here are some tips to survive long distance relationship the separation:

Communication

When you first fall for someone, you want to get to know them. You want to spend time with them and learn from one another. Unfortunately, when you have mileage between you, this can be challenging. In my case, we also had a five-hour difference between us. The following three options are all free.

Viber: This is a great app that allows you to make calls for free. As long as you’re on WiFi or have a data plan, you can connect. You can also text for free, as international texts can add up. Viber allows you to access this great resource from your smartphone, desktop, or laptop.

Whatsapp: Once again, this app will always be near and dear to my heart. It allowed my husband and me to chat all day without worrying about incurring costs. You can text, send voice messages, and even videos. It works through Internet or data, protecting you from an outrageous phone bill.

Skype: You can video chat with anyone, anywhere. Perhaps you want to show your significant other your new puppy, or simply want to say goodnight. With Skype, this is possible.

Postage

Letters are not old-fashion, they’re timeless and thoughtful. There’s something special about pouring your heart out onto a piece of paper, kissing it with lipstick, folding it up in an envelope, and choosing a fun stamp. Sure, email is an obvious choice for effective and fast communication, but letters are on another level. Just as it’s fun to send a letter, it’s twice as fun to receive one.

You’re not only restricted to letters, but packages also bring a whole new world of possibilities. Sending each other gifts is exciting, sharing a connection that you do not have with anyone else.

Don’t Forget the Little Things

I know it’s hard not to be able to see your loved one, but that doesn’t mean you can’t show them how much you care. Don’t forget to tell them how important they are. Be there for them on their toughest of days. Do not get discouraged, as you are fighting for something special. You’re a team, and you can make it work.

Work Towards Your Goals

As I said, sometimes being together isn’t an option right away. Sometimes people are introduced into your life without any warning. A true sign of fate. The reality is, you now know that the other person exists. After I met my husband in England, that was it. I knew, and he knew, that there would never be anyone like each other again.

We were honest about our feelings, working towards a goal. The goal to be with one another. We did what we had to, and that is the most rewarding part of it all. You need to put in the effort and figure out what needs to be done. It won’t always be easy, but I can assure you that the end of the journey is something magical.

Get in touch with immigration if you’re from different countries. If you can afford to do so, immigration lawyers are a great option. They will assist you with everything you need. Each country has different immigration laws, so start doing your homework.

At the end of the day, you have to want it. If you want to be with one another, you’ll make it work. Not everyone can up and leave, especially regarding immigration practices. That is why you need to begin an action plan, working towards your goals. Each time you reach a goal, it will bring a level of excitement and encouragement.

Don’t give up, especially if you feel as though you have something worth fighting for. It can be tough, but at least modern technology allows you to be closer than ever before. I will forever be thankful for everything mentioned above, as I cannot imagine my life without my partner in crime.
